LEPRA was established to help people affected by leprosy. Initially, it focused on supporting the Indian Government's National Leprosy Eradication Pro Read moregramme in Hyderabad. Besides leprosy and lymphatic filariasis, it now works with other diseases such as TB, HIV/AIDS, eye-care, malaria, and disabilities arising from other diseases. The organisation aims to improve health in marginalized or poor communities, particularly women and children, young people, slum populations, and migrants affected by the aforementioned diseases and help them bring about helpful changes in their lives. LEPRA currently operates in ten states with 19 referral centres employing over 400 staff.

Impact

LEPRA has impacted complete treatment to 450,000 people affected by leprosy, distributing protective footwear to 247,633 people, treating 95,512 individuals to prevent disabilities, training 39,800 people on Ulcer Case Management and providing reaction treatments to 13,451 people.

Programs

  • Leprosy Eradication Programme

    LEPRA works towards the elimination of leprosy through early detection, timely treatment, and rehabilitation of patients. It provides support through multidrug therapy administration and has increased its operations to cover 156 districts in nine states. The common theme of its programmes includes system strengthening, empowerment, equity, advocacy, gender and WASH. It has over 25 years of experience in implementing core leprosy programmes.

  • Lymphatic Filariasis Control Programme

    LEPRA helps manage leprosy-related deformities and has widened its services to address the disability care needs of individuals affected by lymphatic filariasis (LF). Its projects cover mapping and listing, morbidity management, disability prevention, foot care, complication treatment, capacity building, MDA support, socio-economic rehabilitation, social audits, system strengthening and hydrocele surgery referrals.

  • Tuberculosis Control Programme

    This programme strives to improve the detection and treatment of TB patients through community-based programs, and by strengthening the health system. Its efforts focus on community mobilization, direct service delivery, private sector engagement, capacity building, advocacy, and research. It partners with various organisations to provide affordable and quality TB tests.

  • Research Programmes

    LEPRA Society's Blue Peter Public Health and Research Centre conducts applied biomedical research on leprosy, TB, and lymphatic filariasis. The centre has a clinic and two well-equipped laboratories and works with clinics and outreach programmes in India. Research is overseen by committees, and the society offers training programs for researchers and medical staff. Results are shared through publications, presentations, and awareness programmes.

  • HIV AIDS Control Programme

    LEPRA has been working on HIV/AIDS care, support, prevention, and treatment for over 20 years. It covers 69 districts in India and works with key populations at higher risk by providing capacity building, knowledge sharing, technical support, and advocacy. Its focus is on reducing stigma and discrimination, promoting the health and rights of the people it works with and enhancing HIV services to marginalized communities.
