Jagori conducts research in feminist issues and supports women in leadership roles. It also supports female survivors of violence and raises awareness Read more about violence, women's health and education thereby contributing towards the collective and individual empowerment of women. The organisation produces and distributes material on feminist issues and advocates for women's rights and gender equality. It organises gender training workshops, sessions and seminars to raise awareness amongst women, especially those who are from tribal and rural areas. Jagori's 'Safe City Free of Violence Against Women and Girls Initiative’ is a program launched in partnership with the government and UN with the aim of making cities safe and violence-free for women and removing the fear of sexual harassment and violence, thereby allowing women to move freely in cities at any time. It is working towards city-wide advocacy for gender sensitivity. Jagori also runs a gender equality program in partnership with another NGO, Pradan, which is supported by the UN Fund for Gender Equality. This program, 'Facilitating Women in Endemic Poverty Regions of India to Access, Actualize and Sustain Provisions on Women Empowerment', aims at the capacity creation of rural and tribal women by making the women empowerment provisions more accessible and sustainable in four states (Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Orrisa, West Bengal). Jagori provides conceptual and strategic guidance on gender and rights perspectives on women’s livelihoods, governance, issues of ending violence against women and enhancing women’s leadership. This is undertaken through trainings, leadership camps, workshops, material development and advocacy. In addition, Jagori conducts various workshops, camps, trainings, campaigns, and consultations to spread awareness regarding feminist principles and strategies. It has also been archiving, collecting, compiling, and producing information and data regarding the women's movement. Jagori also runs a helpline for women facing violence and helps them go through the legal process, receive counseling, seek protection, and find rehabilitation. It also works to sensitize the police, government agencies, media, and other stakeholders regarding this issue, and propose legal changes, with an effort to bring the ideas of women from local resettlement colonies to these policy makers. Jagori also helps link women leaders to social movements that address the right to food, shelter, basic services, and the implementation of laws and policies on domestic violence and sexual harassment. It also works with men and adolescent young boys in the community to re-define dominant masculinities and support ending violence against women and girls. Jagori conducts various campaigns to raise awareness on and end Violence Against Women (VAW), including dowry, Sati, domestic violence, and sexual assault.

Programs

  • Training

    JAGORI places significant emphasis on training as a core element since its inception. Its primary goal is to cultivate an outlook on gender equality by engaging in discussions concerning prevalent and emerging issues within the women's movement. These sessions aim to raise awareness about unaddressed matters affecting the lives of marginalized groups and to sensitize individuals to the systemic nature of violence against women and girls, emphasizing their safety and rights. Moreover, they aim to provide insight into the interconnectedness between patriarchal institutions such as marriage, family, religion, and the State and their impact on women's status. JAGORI operates under the principle that the "Personal is Political," fostering capacities in participants to integrate a feminist perspective into their lives and endeavors.

  • The resource centre

    The organization focuses on producing and disseminating educational and advocacy materials, catering to the informational requirements of various segments including women's groups, NGOs, researchers, media, academia, schools, colleges, women in resettlement areas, youth, and other regular users. Additionally, they undertake the digitization and archiving of vital materials originating from the women's movement dating back to 1984. They extend fellowship support to women activists, bolstering their endeavours within the movement.

  • Violence intervention

    For more than two decades, Jagori has stood alongside diverse groups of women in their struggles against various forms of violence. It has supported women dealing with domestic violence, Dalit women fighting caste-based violence, single women combating societal biases, those facing workplace harassment, and women laborers in the informal sector facing state-inflicted rights violations. Additionally, it has actively aid young women in dealing with sexual abuse and other forms of violence.
    The overarching objective is to mobilize communities to challenge and resist violence. As part of this initiative, Jagori assists communities in organising and establishing mechanisms to address violence within their localities. The interventions extend to two resettlement colonies in Delhi—Madanpur Khader and Bawana. Jagori is deeply engaged in public education and advocacy for policy change on the frontlines.

  • The Safe Cities Initiative

    The Safe Cities initiative collaborates with government bodies, women's organizations, and national and international agencies to pilot and expand initiatives aimed at creating safer and more gender-inclusive cities. Its core activities encompass:
    • Conducting research studies and safety audits to highlight the status of women’s safety.
    • Developing a strategic framework and plan for the initiative. Engaging in public outreach by organizing and participating in various events.
    • Conducting consultations and providing training to service providers. Raising media awareness and developing communication materials.
    • Conducting awareness sessions with diverse groups including students, young women and men, homeless and disabled women, urban planners, civic agencies, and women’s groups.
    • Creating research tool-kits and sharing them with women’s groups nationwide.

  • The Gender Equality project

    As part of the project titled “Facilitating Women in Endemic Poverty Regions of India to Access, Actualize and Sustain Provisions on Women Empowerment,” spearheaded by PRADAN and backed by the UN Fund for Gender Equality, Jagori collaborates with PRADAN and its field offices. Together, they support rural and tribal women across nine districts (Balaghat, Dindori, Hazaribagh, Hoshangabad, Karanjia, Kesla, Koderma, Purulia, Raigada) spanning four states (Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Orrisa, West Bengal). Jagori contributes conceptual and strategic guidance centered on gender perspectives, rights, women's livelihoods, governance, initiatives to combat violence against women, and the promotion of women's leadership. This partnership entails conducting trainings, organizing leadership camps and workshops, providing accompaniment, developing educational materials, and advocating for women's issues.

  • Gender Inclusive Cities Programme

    The Gender Inclusive Cities Programme (GICP), supported by the UN Trust Fund in Support of Actions to Eliminate Violence Against Women, engaged four international project partners across various cities worldwide:
    1. International Centre and Network for Information on Crime in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
    2. Jagori in Delhi, India
    3. Information Centre of the Independent Women’s Forum in Petrozavodsk, Russia
    4. Red Mujer y Habitat de America Latina in Rosario, Argentina
    This program aimed to cultivate cities that foster inclusivity, respecting the rights of all individuals, especially women, to live, work, and move freely without fear or hindrance. Gender Inclusive Cities strived to pinpoint the roots of inequalities and exclusion, while also identifying policies and programs that support women’s inclusion and their "right to the city". The initial phase of the program focused on generating knowledge through methods like mapping, research, and review.
