Major tasks and accomplishments (as reported by the NGO): Nitte University, located at Derlakatte, Mangalore,India, is formed under the Trust of NitteUniversity, a Trust sponsored by the Nitte Education Trust which has established institutions spread in 3 campuses at Nitte, Mangalore and Bangalore.Nitte University is a Category A deemed university by MHRD, GOI in 2012. The institution has also been accredited with A grade by National Assessment Accreditation Council (NAAC)Today, Nitte University, under the aegis of Nitte Education Trust, has a total of five constituent colleges namely K.S. Hegde Medical Academy (established in 1999), A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences (established in 1985), N.G.S.M. Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (established in 1983), Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences (established in 1992) and Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy (established in 1997).K S Hegde Medical Academy, became a constituent Nitte University in 2009. The Institution is named after its founder, the visionary, Late Justice K S Hegde, former Justice of the Supreme Court of India and former Speaker of the Lok Sabha.The Institution has made rapid progress towards being recognized as a medical school with high academic standards delivering quality health care with an emphasis on promoting social responsibility in its students.Achievements:1. National/International Collaborations:The Institution has collaborations and research linkages with international and national organizations like the Wake Forest University, USA, University of Toronto, Canada, University of Minnesota, USA, BARC Research Center ��_ Mangaluru University, India and St. John��_s Research Institute, India. Both undergraduate and post-graduate students are encouraged to participate in research activities.2. Public Health Initiatives:Department of Public Health was established in the year 2013 as a constituent department under K S Hegde Medical Academy. The department is comprised of dynamic public health professionals having diversified experiences with UN agencies like UNICEF, WHO; state and federal health systems and third sector as faculties. The department has partnered with Government of Karnataka and many other national and international organizations for health research and imparting skill training.3. Rural Health Initiatives:The department of Public Health and Community Medicine is managing a network of 18 comprehensive rural health centres along the coastal areas of Karnataka and Kerala for field study on medical, psychiatric and dental health services. Community healthcare services at the grass root-as well as tertiary level are provided through a network of health centres and referral centres. A dedicated air conditioned vehicle for monitoring peripheral rural health activities is also available.4. Research:The Institution has demonstrated a commitment to develop an active research program with the development of state- of the art Central Research Laboratory and has successfullygenerated substantial support from external funding agencies. Currently department isfocused on research in the field of Maternal and Child Health, Non-Communicable Diseases(NCD) risk factors (Tobacco, Obesity, Diabetes, Alcohol and Hypertension), cancerscreening, health promotion including school health programme and health systems.
