Major tasks and accomplishments (as reported by the NGO):
The Museum of Christian Art, Goa reputed to be the only one of its kind in Asia was set up in 1994 with technical and financial assistance from The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Portugal and The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), New Delhi. The Museum houses a very important and unique collection of art objects in ivory, gold and silver, wood and textiles spanning from the 16th century to the 20th century. Apart from their antiquity, it is the Indian contribution (predominantly Hindu) to Christian art that makes the art objects in the Museum unique and recognized the World over as a perfect symbiosis of East-West art and culture, Indian and Portuguese. The Museum has over the years received very many visitors and research scholars not only from India but also from all over the World, is shown as a _Must See_ in most International travel guides and more importantly, as proof of its recognition, its objects have been sought for International exhibitions. Prominent among the International exhibitions are:In Japan in 1999, exhibitions called _St. Francis Xavier-His Life and Times__ held across the Country in 6 different prefectures over a period of 6 months. In Brussels in 2010, to coincide with the 8th ASEM Summit, an exhibition titled _Passage to Asia-25 centuries of cultural exchange between Asia and Europe_-for a period of 5 months. In Australia in 2015, The Art Gallery of South Australia along with the Art Gallery of Western Australia are hosting an exhibition _Treasure Ships: Art in the Age of Spices_ to take place from June 2015 to January 2016.The Museum of Christian Art has a detailed catalogue of all its exhibits. This bilingual (English and Portuguese) catalogue was produced in the year 2011 in collaboration with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, Portugal. The Museum is presently carrying out the works of the Conservation of the Church of Santa Monica/Chapel of the Weeping Cross. This Church, a State protected monument and a historically important church structure, was showing for several years visible signs of decay and deterioration. The Museum with the assistance of experts in the field prepared a project proposal which was approved by the Goa State government who funded the conservation works.
