About

  • Since

    1992

Sampada Grameen Mahila Sanstha(SANGRAM), founded in 1992, operates as a series of groups empowering marginalized communities across six districts in M Read moreaharashtra and Karnataka. Led by women, it challenges gender norms and addresses issues like gender-based violence, resource access, and rights for communities like sex workers, MSM, and transgender individuals. SANGRAM goes beyond surface problems, delving into changing male norms and societal beliefs. As a registered nonprofit, SANGRAM concentrates on preventing GBV and HIV while providing essential care and support to its members. Its approach revolves around community involvement in programme planning, fostering collaboration, and combating the stigma linked to sex work. The organisation's core belief lies in empowering communities to find their own solutions, fostering a sense of agency among people to champion their own rights and not just relying on a select few activists.

Programs

  • VAMP(Veshya Anyay Mukti Parishad) Programme

VAMP, a collective representing 5,000 sex workers in Maharashtra and North Karnataka, focuses on health and human rights since 1990. Notably, it serves as a robust model for sex worker collectives locally and globally, extending its support beyond its own community to transport and migrant workers in the region.

  • Mitra Hostel Programme

    District

Mitra Hostel, established under the Department of Women and Child Development in April 2017, serves as a nurturing haven for the children of sex workers. With the support of SANGRAM, it's administered by VAMP, providing a supportive environment and essential amenities for 40 children—23 girls and 17 boys. Besides their education at a nearby Municipal School, they receive additional tutoring, fostering an environment where they learn, grow, celebrate, and envision their future in a cohesive community setting.

  • Muskan Programme

Muskan, initiated in 2000, stands as a collective supporting male and trans sex workers. Through support groups, specialized HIV interventions, and local advocacy, it addresses HIV/AIDS discrimination while prioritizing prevention, care, and support for affected individuals.

  • Nazariya Programme

Nazariya was established to address the specific needs of Muslim women, emphasizing their collectivization through rights education, support groups, engagement with the Jamat, and other approaches. While it's in its early stages, the primary aim is to cultivate a robust collective among Muslim women, fostering empowerment and solidarity within the community.

  • Mitra Programme

Mitra, a collective of children of sex workers, is overseen by SANGRAM, which manages the MITRA hostel and offers additional educational sessions for these children. The organisation extends its efforts to empower adult children of sex workers through capacity-building initiatives to support VAMP. Though the engagement with these children commenced around 2000, the formal establishment of the MITRA collective took place in 2009 through a collaborative effort between VAMP and SANGRAM in Nipani.
