Since 1995, Chennai City's street and working children have been protected and developed by the secular, non-profit Karunalaya Social Service Society. Read more In the beginning, it was a grassroots organisation dedicated to providing care, protection, and rehabilitation for homeless, migrant, and runaway children as well as youngsters employed in the fishing sector, street kids, and women in the fishing, street, and pavement dwelling communities.

attempting to end child labour and provide more funding for education in North Chennai's most impoverished neighbourhoods Since 2015, Karunalaya has been offering daily after-school programmes in 12 distinct slums located in the most impoverished regions of North Chennai.
Children leave school for a variety of reasons. The child drops out of school due to lack of interest, misbehaviour in school, broken families, and poverty. The kids lose interest in learning and get involved in other undesirable activities as a result. They wind up becoming working children as a result of this. Every academic year, we survey children who are labourers or dropouts in our intervention regions and engage with the families to raise awareness of the value of an education.
