Overview

Kabil promotes livelihood in rural areas of eastern and northeastern India. It was created to provide government agencies, corporate entities, NGOs, and Community Based Organisations (CBOs) with the knowledge of how to promote rural prosperity and well-being of the poor, and provides long-term support until results are visible.

Kabil conducts in-house conceptual and technical training, provides exposure to well developed villages and farmers, and works to mobilize the society, helping villagers organize into groups which enables members to learn and practice new farming techniques, access resources, and grow their farms. It also provides regular on-field support to help increase productivity and income of farmers, focusing on agriculture, live-stock and natural resource management.

The Northeast Rural Livelihood Project (NERLP) uses Kabil's support to build the capacity of state, district, and block level staff (about 100 staff) in the states of Sikkim and Nagaland benefiting more than 10,000 rural households. Kabil also helps the State Rural Livelihood Mission of Jharkhand to train all Block Development Officers (BDOs) on convergence with MGNREGA and a consortium of 7 field NGOs working in 6 districts from Assam to promote rural livelihoods.

Kabil itself is directly working in 6 blocks of the Kamrup (rural) district of Assam to promote various small irrigation water lifting devices (powered by kerosene, electricity, and solar power), which small farmers can afford. The effort is directly benefiting 350 small farmers.

Major Activities

Major tasks and accomplishments (as reported by the NGO):
Kabil is a livelihood promoting organization in rural areas of eastern and northeastern India. Kabil was created to make a sincere effort of supporting others in addressing the do-how gap in livelihood promotion. Professionals with Kabil are those who have done it themselves in the field, were involved in the process of evolution of many of the social mobilization and livelihood promotion approaches that are sought after today and carries with them long experience of supporting others to develop their own do-how. We realize that it requires long engagement with our partners and we are ready to invest our time and efforts for it. We understand that such support requires our serious engagement with their field activities and are cautious that we should neither be intrusive, nor create their dependency on us in promotion of rural livelihoods. Such do-how support on Rural Livelihood Promotion from Kabil is now sought on a continuous basis by agencies like Northeast Rural Livelihood Project (NERLP) for capability building of state, district and block level staff (about 100 staff) in the states of Sikkim and Nagaland benefiting more than 10,000 rural households; State Rural Livelihood Mission of Jharkhand to train all BDOs on convergence with MGNREGA and a consortium of 7 field NGOs working in 6 districts from Assam to promote rural livelihoods. Kabil conducts in-house conceptual and technical training, exposure to well developed villages / farmers and regular on-field support exclusively on promotion of farm based rural livelihoods (productivity and income enhancement) focusing on Agriculture, Live-stock and Natural Resource Management. We do also think that as we support others it will be necessary to create some field demonstrations by our own. While these field demonstrations will allow us action research to create prototypes appropriate to new geographies, these will also reinforce the faith of our partners in us and offer local sites to them for learning. For such purpose, Kabil is directly working in 6 blocks of Kamrup (Rural) district of Assam to popularize various small irrigation water lifting devices (powered by Kerosene, electricity and solar power) affordable to small farmers. The effort is benefiting 350 small farmers directly.
