Major tasks and accomplishments (as reported by the NGO): Institute for Human DevelopmentThe Institute for Human Development (IHD) was established in 1998 under the aegis of the Indian Society of Labour Economics (ISLE) to undertake research and studies in areas relating to labour markets and human development. The Institute is one of the ��_��_��_ICSSR-recognised institutes��_��, a category of Research Institutions created by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), Government of India.IHD is a non-profit autonomous institution registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1861, and it is recognized by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization. Income Tax exemption is available to the Institute under Section 35 (1) (iii). The Institute is also registered under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act, 1976 (FCRA), and is entitled to receive foreign contributions.Main Thematic Research Areas of the Institute include:��_�� Growth, labour markets and employment��_�� Education and capabilities��_�� Health and nutrition��_�� Gender and development��_�� Security and vulnerability��_�� Governance and institutionsOther Activities of the Institute are:��_�� Organization of seminars, workshops, conferences, consultations, lectures and discussions on issues of academic and policy interest, and contemporary relevance;��_�� Conduct of courses and training programmes on issues pertaining to human development;��_�� Networking with other institutions and organizations at regional, national and international levels for facilitating sharing and exchange of information and ideas through joint collaboration and partnership; and��_�� Publication of journals, research reports, working papers, monographs and books on the above issues.Key Strengths: The Institute has undertaken over 250 research projects, sponsored by both national and international organizations and by the state and central governments; organized over 150 seminars, workshops, conferences and policy dialogues; and implemented training and capacity building activities, including a Ph.D. programme. The Institute also participates in a wide range of networks, both in India and abroad, particularly in South Asia. IHD hasDeveloped a number of competencies, the salient ones being:��_�� Research in the core dimensions of human development ��_��_��_ livelihoods, education and health;��_�� Primary survey-based research to analyze policy impacts and social and economic change;��_�� Capacity to mobilize State and non-State actors and engage them in policy debates;��_�� Ability to provide a critical, independent view on development issues;��_�� Conversion of research findings into educational and training material;��_�� Networking at national and international levels;��_�� High quality publications, including two journals: the Indian Journal of LabourEconomics and the Indian Journal of Human Development.The institute has a core group of experienced faculty, besides visiting faculty who are also known academicians and experts from all over the world and various parts of India. In addition, there are a number of research associates who provide support to the faculty and research projects. The Institute��_��s wide network enables it to take advantage of the expertise of a number of senior experts and professionals spread all over the country including outside India.
