Overview

Kilikili works with the vision of creating inclusive play and recreational spaces that are accessible to all children, regardless of their ability. It was started by parents of children with special needs and is driven and managed collectively by volunteers, local municipalities, government departments, corporate organisations, civil society groups and resident welfare associations.

In an attempt to be self-sustaining, Kilikili offers a range of consulting services such as audits and accessibility solutions in schools, offices and institutions and designs play areas that are accessible by children with special needs.

3 public play spaces in Bangalore, 1 in Mangalore and 1 in Mumbai have been made inclusive and disabled-friendly through innovations in play equipment.

Some of the disabled-friendly parks that have been completed by Kilikili in collaboration with Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Paliketo are M N Krishna Rao Park in Basavangudi, Gayatri Devi park, Rajajinagar and Coles Park in Fraser Town.

These parks have play structures that are wheelchair accessible with a ramp. They are also equipped with wheelchair sand tables, safe swings, sensory integration tracks, tyre tunnels, accessible basketball poles, sound rods, textured tiles, bells to enable multi sensory stimulation among children.

Children use the inclusive play spaces through participation in weekday school programmes where special schools bring their children for a morning of play with approximately 100 children visiting each park every week when the schools are in session, and other quarterly events where about 200 children with and without disabilities play together on a Saturday morning, supported by volunteers, parents and teachers.

More than 7000 children with disabilities use the play and recreation areas.

Some of the upcoming projects are:
Developing an inclusive play area in Kaikondanahalli Lake, Bangalore here, in alliance with the Residents Association.
Developing an inclusive play area in the Whitefield Inner Circle Park, Bangalore in association with Sahaya, a parents’ and volunteers’ group.
Developing an inclusive play area in Nagpur, along with ESAF (Evangelical Social Action Forum) and the Nagpur Municipal Corporation.

Another initiative of the Kilikili Trust is Sampoorna Music Therapy Center for children with autism in Bangalore, which focuses on using Indian music as a therapeutic medium to help children with ASD.
