NFTDC, the autonomous R&D institution funded independently and overseen by the Ministry of Mines, is dedicated to advancing Advanced Materials and Inn Read moreovative Processes, as well as Engineering Design, Analysis, Electronics, Instrumentation, and Control systems. This unique Technology Centre thrives on its multidisciplinary knowledge domain, facilitating complex interdisciplinary technology development projects that combine scientific know-why and technical know-how. What sets NFTDC apart are its three inherent traits: 1) financial self-sufficiency, 2) a diverse all-executive workforce, and 3) a research and development strategy focused on applied R&D through contract and sponsored research tailored to the needs of user agencies. These qualities enable NFTDC to play a distinctive role in advancing technology and meeting the demands of various industries and user agencies effectively. NFTDC excels in developing cutting-edge materials, components, and systems across high-tech sectors like Aerospace & Aeronautical, Automotive, Energy (both conventional and non-conventional), Metallurgical & Process Engineering, Biomedical & Healthcare, and Environmental domains. The core competencies of NFTDC, including Design, Advanced Materials & Manufacturing, and Controls & Instrumentation, are seamlessly integrated into all projects, offering comprehensive technology solutions. NFTDC adopts a systems-based approach to technology development, bridging the gap from concept to product realization, and effectively addressing translational research challenges. The institution boasts state-of-the-art facilities for design, advanced manufacturing, product development, pilot production, and advanced testing and characterization. NFTDC hosts Centers of Excellence focused on Electric and Hybrid Electric Vehicle Drives under the National Mission on Electric Mobility (NMEM), as well as Materials & Energy Systems and Advanced Manufacturing Technologies, dedicated to advancing next-generation technologies. NFTDC was one of the four pioneering R & D institutions established in the early 1990s under the Ministry of Mines, Government of India. The inception of NFTDC represented a significant milestone in India's S & T organizational landscape, as it possessed unique genetic characteristics from the very beginning, setting it apart from other research laboratories in the country. A distinctive feature of NFTDC is its financial independence from the Government of India; it has never received any annual budgetary support or grants-in-aid since its establishment. NFTDC was conceived as a non-profit, non-commercial institution with a holistic approach to technology development. This approach emphasizes not only research but also the comprehensive development of products, processes, and system-level design and engineering, spanning from TRL (Technology Readiness Level) 3 to 7. This strategic shift aimed to move beyond the confines of basic research within a single scientist's domain and embrace a more complex, interdisciplinary approach to R & D that encompasses pilot production to validate the technology. The institution was founded on the philosophy that the starting point for research should be the product, and a systems-based approach to technology development should be used to create a wide range of products. This "form follows function" principle, observed in biology, product design, and organizational structures, was embodied in the NFTDC's organizational framework. NFTDC became the vehicle for carrying out essential translational R&D, bridging the gap from materials to components to systems development.

Programs

  • R & D activities

NFTDC's R & D activities primarily operate within the TRL 3 to TRL 7 spectrum. The process commences with the conceptualization of various technologies, incorporating the "know-why" elements, which are then validated at the TRL 3 stage to establish their critical functionality in terms of materials, processes, and designs. Subsequently, this progresses to the design of a product or system-level prototype at TRL 4. This design is iteratively refined through modifications to meet specific service conditions, and testing is conducted using a test rig at TRL 5. At TRL 6, an engineering-scale model is developed, where all design considerations are comprehensively addressed.

  • Knowledge domains

NFTDC operates within three primary macro knowledge domains:
    1. Advanced Materials and Processing
    2. Design, Analysis, and Advanced Manufacturing (CAD/CAM/CAE/RE/RP)
    3. Instrumentation, Electronics & Control (ICEL)
These domains serve as the foundational framework for NFTDC's various projects, each of which relies heavily on the engineering design of components and systems. These three macro domains are further subdivided into numerous subdomains, collectively constituting the core competencies of NFTDC. Each subdomain is represented by specialized equipment, dedicated laboratories, and the expertise of individual knowledge holders. These elements are systematically integrated into project teams, where they collaborate to achieve project objectives and deliver valuable results.
